Including protein powders, super greens + more.

DELUXE! Savory Chai Overnight Oats with Superfoods.

DELUXE! Savory Chai Overnight Oats with Superfoods.

You can have good, fast and cheap AND deluxe all in one breakfast bowl. While you know I am a HUGE fan of smoothies, smoothies don't always cut it in the winter time. Sometimes we need something warm, a bit more soothing. There are of course endless variations on this kind of bowl, but here's what I want to share first and foremost.

Soak your oats overnight on a Sunday night before the week starts.

This removes a lot of the phytic acid in the oats (which can be hard on your digestive system), and makes it so that you don't even have to cook them. Plus they retain all of their raw superfood power, and have a nice chewy texture.

How to do this: Place in a tuperware, fill with desired amount of oats. 1 cup will do for 2-3 servings. Place in refrigerator overnight. Drain water the next day. This will stay good for 4-5 days refrigerated.

This makes reheating and having a gourmet breakfast so easy and so healthy. Yes.

Ingredients

  • Vanilla or Plain Almond Milk
  • Chai Spice Mix. Blue Lotus Chai is my favorite as its just pure spices, no sweetener.
  • 1-2 teaspoons melted Coconut Oil
  • 1/2 cup soaked Oats. or the amount you desire.
  • 1 tablespoon Chia Seeds
  • A handful of Gogi Berries
  • A handful of mulberries
  • A handful of fresh or frozen blueberries
  • A handful of raw cacao
  • 1/2 Banana

Directions

1. Soak Oats Overnight

2. Combine Almond Milk, Coconut Oil, Chai Spice, Oats + Chia Seeds. Stir until well combined. Add a dash of quality sea salt.

3. Heat in microwave or on stovetop if desired.

4. Top with delicious superfoods.

Enjoy while taking a morning pause to enjoy your beautiful meal!

Refreshing + SO good. Clean Green Mint Protein Smoothie

Refreshing + SO good. Clean Green Mint Protein Smoothie

This smoothie is so good and is my go-to. There are a bunch of ingredients included here - enjoy the power combo!

It has all of the things most of us want on any given morning.. it's refreshing (mint), protein rich (protein powder), healthy + stabilizing fats (coconut oil + almond butter), creamy goodness (almond milk), antioxidant rich super greens and it tastes like a mint chocolate chip milkshake.

Ingredients for 2 servings

  • 2 scoops Protein Powder
  • 1 scoop super greens
  • 1/2 - 1 Banana -depending on how sweet you like your smoothie.
  • 1-2 tablespoons Almond Butter
  • 3/4 cup Plain almond or coconut milk.
  • About 2 teaspoons melted coconut oil (for healthy fats)
  • 1 drop ginger essential oil (or an inch of fresh chopped ginger)
  • 1 drop spearmint essential oil (or a handful of fresh mint)
  • a handful of Cacao nibs (1-2 tablespoons)
  • A few ice cubes

Directions

As you would expect, the directions for making a smoothie are pretty simple. Except you want to watch out for when you add the coconut oil.

1. Add almond milk to bottom of blender

2. Add all other ingredients, except for coconut oil + ice cubes and blend.

3. If coconut oil is hardened, melt it. Then add to mixture + blend. (You don't want to add coconut oil to a really cold mixture, it will harden and you won't enjoy the texture.)

4. Optional - add ice cubes if you want a colder drink.

Enjoy!

health hack: mint supports natural weight loss + is great for digestion.

Like many herbs, mint contains an abundance of healing properties. Mint is a natural stimulant and it has been studied to support natural weight loss, reduce inflammation in the body, and even calm headaches. It's a great addition to a post-workout smoothie because the body is responding to natural free radicals in the body, and mint will naturally help to remove them and restore your body back to optimal health.

Enjoy!

Creamy Vegan Pumpkin Spice Smoothie

Creamy Vegan Pumpkin Spice Smoothie

There is absolutely no way to fight the creamy pumpkin craving of fall. So find a way to enjoy it! This is a super easy + delicious smoothie for you to enjoy.

  • 1.5 scoops Vanilla Protein Powder
  • 3/4 cup Vanilla almond milk. (Or use Plain depending on your sweetness tolerance)
  • 1 teaspoon Maple Syrup for sweetner. Or your sweetner of choice.
  • 1 - 2 teaspoons melted coconut oil (for healthy fats)
  • 1/4 cup Pumpkin purée
  • 1 Tbsp. Pecans, Walnuts or any nut you have on hand
  • a Dash (or 2!) Pumpkin pie spice, to taste
  • Optional - 1 drop of ginger essential oil
  • A few ice cubes

You can probably find something like this in your grocery store. It's a simple blend of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg + allspice. I recommend choosing a real spice blend and not something loaded with sugar. You can always add a sweetner like honey or maple syrup if you want an extra sweet taste, but the premade mixes usually contain artificial color and sweetner. So avoid those when possible.

Instructions

1. Add almond milk to the bottom of the smoothie so it's easy to blend all of the ingredients.

2. Add all ingredients except Ice and blend. If you want to add the ice - go ahead and add it once everything is already creamy.

Health Hack:

If you're an avid smoothie maker and drinker like me, keep all your smoothie ingredients handy if possible. Near your nutribullet (my favorite, light and easy to use blender) and keep your ingredients accesible so that making a smoothie is as easy as pie.

Get it.. pumpkin pie..

But for real - make it easy so that making the healthy choice is as EASY as possible :)

A couple times a week I also make smoothies at night while I'm making dinner and waiting for something to cook. I leave it in the blender for when I know I'm going to be coming home hungry in the morning, or I simply want to make my life easier. Then I simple re-blend. It's the best and sets your days up for success.

Enjoy!

day 10: Asteya "I am enough"

Day 10: Asteya

practice on astray, non-stealing + abundance:
take a pause in your day when you feel a strong desire.
i want this. i feel like i need to buy this really nice new sundress.. or you want someone to call you back, like now. (that’s me)
and to place your hand over your heart.
repeat to yourself, or even outloud: i am enough. i am abundant. at least 3 times.
take a few deep cleansing breaths.
i am all good. i am full of love and light the energy of the entire universe.

thank you for sharing your abundance + light
have a beautiful day friends!

Day 7: Satya

day 7: stay = truth.

Day 6: Ahimsa Meditation

Day 6 of the #summerofyogalove series.

Simple simple beautiful practice for today...one of my favorite practices of all time.

The theme for today is ahimsa, again.

To practice today:
you can go about your day and practice wishing others well.
To expand your intention for compassion and wellbeing with all beings you encounter.
that’s it!

i wish you well today :)
sending love,
julie

Day 5: Ahimsa

1 minute loving kindness meditation practice for today:
Sit or stand comfortably.

If you feel comfortable where you are, close your eyes and place your right hand over your heart. Then your left.
Take a few deep cleansing breaths.
Call to mind an image of yourself. Observing yourself, as a beautiful human, deserving of love.

Repeat this mantra (phrase) 5 times
may I be happy, may I be healthy, may i be peaceful, may I live with ease.

And now call to mind all of humans, all beings everywhere. Hold them in your thoughts as you repeat the mantra:
may you be safe, may you be healthy, may you be happy, may you live with ease.

May this practice serve you, and may your practice serve all beings everywhere.

the light in me honors the light in you

Essential Oils 101

Transform your energy, health and mood with essential oils.

Essential oil healing is one of those things you learn about and you are forever changed. For me and for hundreds of people I know who use them. Using them is about as close as it gets to having a magic bullet cure all in healing, and the oils I use and share with my friends, family, and students are doTERRA therapeutic grade oils. So yes, they really heal.

What they are: Essential oils are the essence of a plant (root, bark, seed, bud, flower..) They are harvested, steamed and the oil extracted. They're uses and beneficial qualities are endless.

Why I love them: If I had to say why I love them most for emotional balancing and soothing. I love having something physical, tangible, beautiful that I can use on my body or in my

diffuser to permeate my house.  I don't really like perfume so this was revolutionary for me)

Why essential oils are so powerful: Our sense of smell is the most powerful sense we have! It is connected to the limbic brain and when we support it with calming/ balancing/ beautiful essence it can have a direct impact on our mood and behavior. For example..you know the feeling of smelling food that your mom used to make when you were a kid? That powerful emotional rush.. that's it. That's the power of healing with our sense of smell with the most pure, therapeutic oil.

benefits of essential oils

to name a few..

  • boost the immune system
  • relax the body and soothe sore muscles
  • heal skin conditions + scars
  • alleviate allergy symptoms
  • brighten your mood, soothe a busy mind
  • promotes great sleep
  • general relaxation and enjoyment
  • The benefits are endless...

Day 3: The 8 limbs of Yoga: Yamas + Niyamas

Day 3: The 8 limbs of Yoga: Yamas + Niyamas

hey!

ok so the 8 limbs of yoga are a guide to the yogic art of living.

there are 8 steps in all, and they can serve you to live with curiosity, with kindness, and in a way that feels really good, and meaningful and truthful, to you.

so the 8 limbs are in the sanskrit language. they might sound a little funny at first. don’t worry.

1 - yamas.

the yamas relate to how we live in the world with integrity. our behavior in an out in the world.

2 - niyamas

relates to our self-discipline and spiritual observances. our behavior towards and with ourselves.

3- Asana

Yoga postures and the physical yoga practice, which is only one! of 8 parts of yoga.

The body is seen as the temple of the spirit so we practice yoga to keep the body healthy and fluid.

FAVORITE KAUAI HIKES/ ADVENTURE

Hike the Nopali Coast Trail. It is unbelievably gorgeous and I think I could hike it a million times before it gets old. Spectacular views starting early on.  On the way back, stop at Sushi Girl hut for the best local sushi.

Visit Waimea Canyon. The driving that area is spectacular. There's only one road in from the south, so you can make stops along the way and see it all from little rest stops on the side of the road. The hike we did was mostly under the canopy of the trees until the very end where you see me with my backpack overlooking the water. The view at the top is amazing! Around 4-5 miles round trip. Make sure you bring enough water!! (we didn't) There is nothing up in this area.

Walk or Bike the Bike Path in Kapa'a. We parked at Kealia Beach one day for a run and ran south. Another day we visited early in the morning and walked north along the path to see the sunrise which is also gorgeous. That's what's in the beginning of the video.

FAVORITE PLACES TO CHILL IN KAUAI

Visit Kapa'a + Hanalei. Kapa'a is a cute little surfer town, and is our favorite town there. Hanalei Bay is also cool.

Afternoon hang at the St. Regis Hotel Beach + cocktails on the terrace..  Everything at this hotel is amazing and you can visit totally free as a guest, they welcome it. You can even valet park free. First check out the lobby, as it is unbelievable. Probably the coolest hotel lobby I've ever seen.

And all beaches in Hawaii are public, so you can access St. Regis public beach which is absolutely gorgeous. shown in video. (much nicer than the Hanalei Bay beach right next door which is the town beach)  Swimming here is also great because a lot of the beaches in Kauai have big waves + currents. The water here is typically calm.

Perched up high on the cliffs, it's the most epic place to watch the sunset + surfers.

FAVORITE PLACE TO SLEEP IN KAUAI

Kauai Shores in Kapa'a. This place feels like an updated hotel from the 70s. What we absolutely loved there was waking up and walking to the ocean to watch the sunrise. The rooms are super simple, it's not fancy. But perfectly clean + livable. The cafe there is also great and every meal we had there was awesome. They also have a little fridge in the room which is nice. We are not paid by them btw. We just had really great experiences there and think it's a great value + cool experience place.

FAVORITE PLACES TO EAT IN KAUAI DINNERS

Dolphin Sushi. Right at the beginning of town in Hanalei. Great for dinner and outdoor dining experience. Apparently celeb sitings of George Clooney and the like can also be found here.

Postcard Cafe. In Hanalei. Super cute local place. on the pricier side. Great food and great people. Really chill.

Sushi Girl Sushi. North of Hanalei. Great little hole in the wall place off the side of the road on the way to Nopali Coast Hike. Just north of Hanalei Bay. We ate there after the hike and was awesome. Super fresh sushi.

Cafe @ Kauai Shores Hotel. Kapa'a. Even if you don't stay there, it's a sweet spot to visit since it's on the beach. Nice for daytime or dinner.

CASUAL/ LUNCH

The Coconut Cup Juice Bar + Cafe. Just north of town in Kauai. It's a small little hut with outdoor seating. Really fresh + high quality salads + smoothies.

Papaya's Natural Foods + Cafe. In Kapa'a. Great salad, soup + sandwich bar if you're looking for something super healthy. This is THE health food place of Kauai. Everything is vegan. It's also a supermarket with all the healthy goods, local produce, etc. It's also in the same shopping plaza as Safeway.

The Big Island / Kona

The Big Island / Kona

BEACHES/ DAY HANGOUTS

where we went + loved !

We swam almost everyday we were here during our month-long stay on the Big Island. We prioritized life around swimming and being near the water. Everywhere you go you swim with fish. The water is plenty warm (though not Caribbean) and it's just the best!

KONA AREA/ NORTH OF KONA

Swim the Iron Man course and then go to Huggos for sunset. The Ironman course is so beautiful! It's right in the middle of the town in Kona, and it's a protected area, with super clear water. It was one of my favorite swims

Run / Swim / Hang @ Kekaha Kai State Park. An incredible park! About 1.5 mile long road as you drive in. Nice grade for a moderately challenging run up and back. The road is amazing, you feel like your on mars. Then you get to this insane beach.. photo above. We ran the road and then swam. The most beautiful blue water and white sand beaches. Incredibly gorgeous. This place definitely gets crowded and hot by mid-morning so get there early.

The Four Seasons Hotel - This place is just off the charts. It's open to the public. We went to have lunch and hang by the beach and walk the property. The landscaping, and the way the place is integrated into the natural landscape is so beautiful. The food is great too, of course.

CAPTAIN COOK AREA/ SOUTH OF KONA

Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park  - Definitely one of the most beautiful national parks I've ever been to. Just amazing on every level. The view of sunset, palm trees, amazing running trails.

Snorkel / Swim @ Honaunau Bay / Two Step. This is right next to Puuhonua Park. It's an amazing spot to go for a casual swim at any time of day. In the morning we've seen dolphins, and at night, epic sunset and local Hawaiians hanging out, rowing and enjoying life.

Captain Cook Beach. The bay over from Honauanau Bay, this place is possibly even more special. It's almost tucked into the mountains behind it, and definitely has a special energy there.
